About This Policy

SaveExcess ("we", "us", "our") is a surplus rescue platform operated by Njinju Labs LLC that connects donors of surplus food and other valuables with people who need them. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and your rights over it.

1. Data We Collect

• Name and email address — provided when you create an account.
• Role (Donor / Recipient) — chosen during registration.
• Profile city and country — entered by you or resolved from your GPS location.
• Location (GPS coordinates) — used to show listings near you and to attach a pickup location to your donations. We never sell or share precise coordinates with third parties.
• Phone number — optional. Only stored if you choose to share it for a specific listing, and only revealed to the user who claims that listing.
• Listing photos — uploaded images are stored securely in Firebase Storage.
• Device notification token (FCM) — stored to deliver push notifications when items are available in your city. Removed when you log out.
• Usage data — actions such as posting, claiming, and collecting are stored in our database to calculate leaderboard stats.

2. How We Use Your Data

• To operate the app: authenticate your account, display listings, process claims, and send notifications.
• To improve the service: understand aggregate usage patterns.

We do not use your data for advertising and we do not sell it.

3. Data Storage & Processors

Your data is stored using Google Firebase (Firestore, Firebase Auth, Firebase Storage, and Firebase Cloud Messaging). Firebase acts as our data processor under Google's standard data processing terms. Data may be stored on servers located in the United States and other regions where Google operates.

4. Location Data & Pickup Safety

We request "When In Use" location access on your device to determine your approximate position. GPS coordinates are used solely to:

• Show you listings within your area.
• Tag your donations with a pickup location.

When posting a listing, you are given a choice:

• Share GPS location — your coordinates are stored and displayed on the map so recipients can navigate to you directly.
• Private location — your exact GPS coordinates are never stored or shown to anyone. Instead, you provide written pickup instructions (e.g. "Meet me at the green gate on Baker St"). Those instructions are only revealed to the specific person who claims your listing, and are never shown publicly on the map or feed.

We recommend the private location option if you are posting from your home address or any location you prefer to keep confidential.

You can deny location access entirely; the app will fall back to your manually set city. We do not track your location in the background.

5. Phone Number Sharing

You may optionally choose to share a phone number with the person who claims one of your listings. This is per-listing, off by default, and the number is only revealed to the user who has claimed that specific listing — never publicly on the feed or map.

6. Push Notifications

With your permission, we send push notifications when items are available in your city. You can withdraw consent at any time in your device's notification settings. Revoking permission removes your device token from our database.

7. Data Retention

Account data is kept for as long as your account is active. Expired and withdrawn listings are removed from the live feed but may be retained briefly for auditing. You may request deletion of your account and data by contacting us.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction you may have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you.
• Correct inaccurate data (via Edit Profile in the app).
• Request deletion of your account and data.
• Object to or restrict certain processing.

9. Children

SaveExcess is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, please contact us and we will delete it.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
